- Remove the bandage, from your new tattoo, 2-3 hours after getting it and wash it using an antimicrobial soap (liquid or bar soap is fine) and warm water. It's perfectly fine to take a shower and to get your tattoo wet. Never re-bandage your tattoo after the initial bandage is removed.
- If your new tattoo is large in size and/or took more then 3 hours to complete in one sitting then you should leave the bandage on for 12 to 24 hours and wash with hot water (USE CAUTION AND PLEASE DO NOT BURN YOURSELF) in the shower or soaking in the tub. Soaking the tattoo is only recommended the first 3-5 days when the tattoo is slimy and only for large tattoos and/or a long tattoo session.
- Next blot your tattoo dry using a clean towel or let air dry.
- Apply a thin layer of a non-scented alcohol free lotion (curel or Lubriderm) to your tattoo just as you would apply lotion to your body for dry skin. Wash your hands and place a small amount of lotion in one hand; then massage the lotion thoroughly, but gently, into your tattoo.
- Apply lotion, in this same manner, to your tattoo at least 4-5 times a day.
- Tattoos should be kept clean and free from dirt no picking or scratching or unnecessary touching regardless if your hands are clean. If your new tattoo itches slap it.
- For the first 4 weeks, the tattoo should receive no exposure to sun, and no swimming in chlorinated water.
